STEMnet

This national programme aims to increase participation and attainment in science, technology engineering and maths related subjects. STEMnet run a network of science clubs, and arrange ambassador training for people from industry.

The Industrial Trust

The Industrial Trust organise visits for groups, particularly of young people, into companies.

UKCME

Primarily concerned with improving quality of learning and teaching of materials related subjects in further and higher education, but offers some limited outreach activities.

Connexions

Offers general advice on careers and education to people between the ages of 13 and 19.

Smallpiece Trust

An independent charity promoting engineering careers to young people. Offers short sessions in schools for year 8 and 9 pupils to introduce creative thinking and problem solving. Also offers residential courses based at Universities for pupils in years 9, 10 and 11 to learn more about specific types of engineering.

Headstart

An organization which runs one week residential summer camps for students in year 12 who are potentially interested in studying Engineering or applied sciences at University. Applicants can choose from either a general Engineering course, where they experience the different types of engineering to help them choose which to study, or specific subject courses.

The Engineering Education Scheme

This is an annual event in which companies set a problem that is worked on by 6th formers considering careers in engineering. 1300-1400 students are involved each year, on projects lasting six months. Of these students, 89% go on to further education in engineering.

The British Science Association (Formerly the-BA)

The British Science Association runs the annual science festival, and organises several events aimed at increasing public awareness of science.

IOM3 Schools Affiliate Scheme

The IOM3 Schools Affiliate Scheme was established in 1999 and has members from all over the United Kingdom and across Europe. The aim of the scheme is twofold:

  • To support the teaching of the materials, minerals and mining related topics in the key stage 3, key stage 4 and post-16 curriculum.
  • To raise awareness of and promote careers in the fields of materials, minerals and mining engineering.
