Test results improve quality assurance on anti-bacterial coatings

As part of their ongoing drive to enhance the surface engineering capacity of regional industry, SEG has recently been providing technical support & advice to Pegler Ltd – the long established (since 1899) manufacturer of an impressive range of advanced plumbing and heating products that are highly respected (and widely used) across the world. This well-known company remains one of the largest employers
in South Yorkshire, with approximately 530 people working at their Doncaster headquarters.

Engineering Manager Paul Cooke approached SEG to provide an independent analysis of the Kliniklene™ antibacterial coating system developed by Pegler for their premium ‘Performa’ range of washroom fittings. The coating is used increasingly on company product designed for use in the healthcare market – where its efficacy in combating MRSA, E-coli, and other potentially life-threatening infections is now widely recognised.

The RCSE at Sheffield University has (on behalf of SEG) applied a variety of advanced analytical techniques to a selection of Kliniklene-coated samples provided by the company – generating valuable new information which allowed Pegler to develop and improve their Quality Assurance procedures.

R&D Manager Tom Manning said: “The data and interpretation provided by the SEG team at Sheffield University has given us a valuable, deeper insight into the nature and key properties of our Kliniklene coatings – allowing us to understand better what makes them work so well. This knowledge ensures that we can continue to provide the necessary high levels of technical advice and guidance to our supply chain – to optimize and maintain the performance of our Kliniklene-coated fittings for a growing market sector that is of strategic importance to Pegler.”
