Universities
The Yorkshire and Humber region is home to 11 universities and 3 higher education colleges with a combined turnover of over £1.429 billion. As a percentage of the regional gross domestic product, the higher education sector is the largest such sector in any region outside London. It is estimated that, both directly and indirectly the sector generates £2.8 billion of output in the regional economy as employers, employment generators, importers of students, business creation and providers of knowledge and skills.
Seven of these universities are actively involved in the various disciplines related to engineering and materials. This provides a high concentration of research and development activities resulting in many break through technologies and processes, not to mention a pool of high calibre graduates ready to enter the workforce.
